Culture shock followed quickly by awe and excitement would be an understandable reaction for those visiting Richmond New Life Church last Sunday morning! Regulars and visitors alike were transported to the nations as their senses were bombarded with the sights, sounds, smells, fun activities and tastes from all over the world. After getting through customs (yes, customs!) and receiving a special passport packed with information about the nations the adventure began, one could well believe you were walking through a traditional home in Japan, a street market in Fiji or Morocco so authentic were the displays, and that’s just to name a few of them! India,
. . . a real example of
practical
Christianity. |
Europe, Moldova, Papua New Guinea and other nations of the world were fully and creatively presented. The colourful dress of the participants added an extra touch of cultural richness and diversity to the day with gorgeous saris, traditional Chinese dress, burkas, Mexican ponchos and island lava lavas.
Representatives from a variety of non-profit organisations were available to share their projects with those keen for more information or willing to become involved. These included:
MMM (Mobile Missions Maintenance),
CFI (Christian Friends of Israel),
Tear Fund,
Youth With A Mission,
Marine Reach Ministries,
World Outreach,
Kiwilink,
Truffles fundraiser for Moldovan orphans,
MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship),
God’s Story and
OMF (Overseas Missionary Fellowship).
For the children there was a fun range of activities and competitions – henna hand designs, hair braiding (African style), colouring in, paper planes to make and lots more. To top off this great event ,those who wanted lunch could choose from a variety of international cuisine including the good old kiwi sausage sandwich.
The folk at Richmond New Life Church know how to have a good time! The atmosphere throughout the day was fun and welcoming. They clearly embrace and include the range of cultures who attend their fellowship. Their tangible support of some very worthwhile causes around the world such as Kiwilink (caring for the people of Zimbabwe) is surely a real example of practical Christianity.
